Hue
Hue is located in the central part of Vietnam, 660 km from Hanoi and 1080 km from Saigon. Of the ancient capitals in Vietnam, Hue is the only one that still has the intact appearance of a monarchic capital consisting of walls, palaces, and royal tombs. Consequently, Hue is among Vietnam's most valued national treasure in terms of history and heritage. So it is no surprise that it usually features on each first time visitor’s itinerary of Vietnam.
The old imperial capital city lies on the bank of the Song Huong river, also known as the Perfume River. The series of tombs, palaces, monuments and pagodas throughout the city earned it a UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The pace of Hue is somewhat more relaxed in comparison to the bigger cities of Hanoi and Saigon and less commercialised with it. A day strolling around the 'four citadels’ will be a day well spent. Hiring a bike is a pleasant way to get around too if you fancy it. There are several tombs of ancient emperors located along the banks of the river. Hue has too many pagodas to name but the octagonal 21 metre high tower of Thien Mu Pagoda is probably the most iconic one and well worth a visit and makes for great photo opportunities. Or simply take in the sights from the comforts of a boat trip down Perfume River.
Only 14km from the centre of Hue is Thuan An beach, one of central Vietnam's naturally prettiest beaches. On the way to Thuan An beach is My An Hot Springs water park which is built around a natural cold spring and offers several hot springs, massage pools and a great spot for the kids.
