Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai is the quieter neighbour of Chiang Mai. It is Thailand’s northernmost province and a land of outstanding natural beauty. Located close to the famous Golden Triangle, the meeting point of the borders of Burma, Laos and Thailand. Although small this delightful city has a diverse range of attractions all of which can be enjoyed in its relaxed atmosphere. Attractions range from visiting ancient settlements and Buddhist shrines to stunning mountain scenery and traditional hilltop villages where the tribes still live pretty much as they did years ago. The main tribes all have their own language and customs. The region is rich in handicraft items including hand-woven cotton materials and wood carving products. Jungle trekking and hiking trails are the favoured way of exploring this area.
Although small, Chiang Rai does have some of the amenities usually associated with larger cities. As it welcomes more Western visitors the numbers of restaurants and shops are growing.
