Welcome to our Slovenia and a Taste of Trieste Tour, a perfect blend of Alpine landscapes, medieval castles, vibrant culture, and Adriatic coastal views. Embark on a captivating journey to Slovenia and the enchanting Italian city of Trieste, combining Slovenia’s stunning natural beauty and historic towns with the Mediterranean charm of Italy’s northeastern coast.
Our adventure begins in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s lively and picturesque capital where we will spend our first three nights. From here we will visit Slovenia’s jewel, Lake Bled, along with Bohinj, Ljubljana Castle and the Postojna Caves. We will then travel to Portoroz, Slovenia’s popular resort town where we will stay for the next three nights. Here we can relax in this beautiful coastal destination and visit the Croatian town of Pula. Finally, we travel across the border into Italy to the charming city of Trieste, a fascinating blend of Italian, Austrian, and Slavic influences, with its grand architecture, historic landmarks, and vibrant café culture.

Itinerary


DAY 1 - Travel to Slovenia

Leave Dublin airport for our direct flight to Trieste. Upon arrival we will be welcomed by our tour leader and local guide and travel to our hotel in Ljubljana. You will have some free to explore this wonderful city.

DAY 2 - Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj

After breakfast, you will set off for a scenic drive towards the Slovenian Alpine region, a stunning area nestled at the foothills of the Julian Alps and on the edge of Triglav National Park. Your first stop will be Bled, one of Slovenia's most iconic destinations, known for its breathtaking natural beauty.
Take a traditional wooden Pletna boat, unique to Bled, and enjoy a serene ride across the lake to Bled Island. As you approach, you’ll see the iconic Church of the Assumption, which sits at the heart of the island. According to local legend, if you ring the church’s wishing bell three times and make a wish, it will come true! Explore the island, soak in the views, and enjoy the magical atmosphere of this fairy-tale setting.

After your visit to Bled, your tour will continue to Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s largest natural lake and another Alpine gem. Located in Triglav National Park, Lake Bohinj is surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Julian Alps and is famous for its pristine beauty and crystal-clear waters. We return to Ljubljana in the late afternoon.

DAY 3 - Ljubljana City Tour

Your day begins with a guided tour through the Old Town of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Known for its charming atmosphere and mix of baroque and art nouveau architecture, Ljubljana is a delightful blend of history and modernity. As you stroll through the narrow streets, you will be fascinated by the insights of the city’s history, culture, and architecture. The Ljubljanica River meanders through the heart of the city, and you’ll cross some of Ljubljana’s most picturesque and famous bridges. You will have the option to visit Ljubljana Castle, overlooking the City of Dragons.
In the afternoon, you’ll have time to explore Ljubljana at your own pace. There’s no shortage of options to fill your afternoon with memorable experiences. Enjoy the central market for local delicacies or relax in Tivoli Park.

DAY 4 - Postojna Caves and Portoroz

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel in Ljubljana, you will depart for the beautiful Slovenian coast. On the way, prepare for a memorable visit to the Postojna Caves, one of Slovenia’s most extraordinary natural attractions.
These caves boast a vast 27-kilometre underground system filled with stunning natural formations. Your guided tour will begin with an exciting ride on an underground train, which takes you deep into the cave system. As you journey through the various passages, tunnels, galleries, and chambers, marvel at the breathtaking dripstones, stalactites, and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years. The Postojna Caves are also famous for their unique wildlife, particularly the olm (Proteus anguinus), a blind amphibian salamander endemic to the underground waters of southern Europe.

Afterwards you will continue your journey towards the coast. Once you arrive in Portorož, you will check into your hotel, where you’ll be staying for the next three nights. Take some time to settle in, relax, and enjoy the coastal town or Portoroz. Dinner tonight is included, at the hotel.

DAY 5 - Tour of Pula

After breakfast you will depart for the Croatian town of Pula. As you travel, take in the stunning views of the Istrian coastline, with its rugged cliffs and azure waters, rolling vineyards, and charming medieval towns dotting the landscape. Pula is the largest city on the Istrian peninsula, renowned for its well-preserved Roman architecture.
You will visit Pula Arena, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. This impressive structure was built in the 1st century AD. You will then explore the narrow streets of Pula’s Old Town. After the guided tour, the rest of the afternoon is yours to explore Pula at your leisure. We will then return to our hotel. Dinner tonight is included at the hotel.

DAY 6 - Portoroz

After a busy few days, today is all about relaxation and exploration at your own pace in Portorož. With its beautiful coastline and charming surroundings, you have plenty of options to create a delightful day that suits your interests. You can choose to explore the cultural heritage of the Secovlje salt pans, discover the charm of Izola, hike the scenic Parenzana Trail, take a boat ride to Piran or simply enjoy the beach, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Dinner tonight is included at the hotel.

DAY 7 - Trieste

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel in Portorož, you will check out and depart for the beautiful city of Trieste, Italy. Known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning architecture, Trieste is a melting pot of cultures, an important port of the region and a coffee capital of Europe. James Joyce loved the city of Trieste and lived here for 15 years. Our local guide will take you through the city’s most remarkable sights. You will then have free time to enjoy coffee, drinks and local dishes on Piazza dell Unita d’Italia or shop in the delightful local shops. Trieste promises to be a memorable destination.

DAY 8 - Depart Trieste and fly home

After breakfast we check out of our hotel and transfer to Trieste airport for our return flight to Dublin.

Please note that this is our planned itinerary but sometimes due to circumstances outside our control we may have to alter it slightly.

Please note all of our tours include some level of walking activity and may include ascending/descending steps. They are not suitable for people with walking difficulties and/or limited mobility.
