Embark on a unique and lesser-known route of the Camino de Santiago by taking a walking holiday along the Camino del Norte, or the Northern Way. This ancient path, once sheltered from the Muslim-dominated Iberian Peninsula by the Picos de Europa and Cordillera Cantábrica mountains, was considered the safest passage for Christian pilgrims journeying to the tomb of St. James. As you traverse this historic trail, you'll discover the lush green landscapes of Galicia, dotted with picturesque valleys, tiny villages, and Romanesque churches. Marvel at gems like the Sobrado dos Monxes Monastery, before joining the famous French Way and concluding your pilgrimage at the iconic Cathedral of Santiago.

This self-guided adventure offers you the flexibility to walk at your own pace, with carefully prepared walking notes and convenient luggage transfers between accommodations. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty, history, and culture of this unforgettable bucket-list experience. Buen Camino!

Itinerary

Day 1
Travel independently to your accommodation in Vilalba, the start of the last 100KM of the Northern Way. Take the opportunity to explore Vilalba's many attractions. Visit its impressive castle and medieval fortress, offering panoramic views of the town and surrounding countryside. A leisurely stroll through the historic centre will lead you to the Santa María de Vilalba Church, as well as narrow streets filled with shops and restaurants. Get some dinner and prepare yourself for the exciting six days of walking ahead.

Day 2
This morning after breakfast at your accommodation, put on your hiking boots and embark on your Camino de Santiago holiday on the Northern Way. Your walk today will take you from Vilalba to Baamonde, a journey though the ‘Terra Cha’ or the flat lands. You'll wind your way through fertile farmlands, peaceful forest paths, and rural roads, gradually reaching Baamonde, where you can relax and soak in the tranquil surroundings.

Walking distance 19km // walking time approximately 4-5 hours

Day 3
Start your day with a hearty breakfast before continuing your journey. Today’s walk is relatively flat with gentle inclines, allowing you to fully appreciate the stunning green countryside of Galicia. Along the way, you'll pass through small farms, cross medieval bridges, and enjoy the beauty that has captivated pilgrims for centuries. Your destination is Miraz, a quaint rural village that offers a glimpse into local history and culture. Be sure to visit the Church of Santa Maria de Miraz and the Chapel of San Alberte, both excellent examples of traditional Galician architecture.

Walking distance 15km // walking time approximately 3-4.5 hours

Day 4
Today’s journey will take you through lush fields, meadows, and enchanting woodlands as you ascend to the highest point of your Camino, Marcela, standing at 710 meters above sea level. Pause to take in the breathtaking views before descending to what is sure to be one of the highlights of your holiday, the monastery in Sobrado Dos Monxes. Founded in the 10th century, this impressive monastery boasts a stunning facade, 17th-century cloisters, and several chapels. Take your time exploring this historical treasure before settling in for the night.

Walking distance 25km // walking time approximately 5-6 hours

Day 5
Today marks your final day hiking on the Camino del Norte before merging with the famous French Way. Immerse yourself in the lush landscapes, passing through native oak forests and rolling green fields. Cross the River Seco on the historic Magdalena Bridge as you approach Furelos and continue to the vibrant town of Arzúa. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and renowned local cheese and honey, Arzúa is the perfect place to relax and connect with fellow pilgrims.

Walking distance 22km // walking time approximately 5-6 hours

Day 6
After breakfast today join more hikers as you continue your pilgrimage on the French Way through scenic eucalyptus forests, quiet villages and bubbling streams for most of the day. A must-see along today's route is the Chapel of Santa Irene, a popular stop among pilgrims, known for its unique statues of Santiago. Your journey will end in the peaceful area around O Pedrouzo, where you can rest and recharge for your final day on the Camino.

Walking distance 18km // walking time approximately 4-5.5 hours

Day 7
You’re almost there! Stop today in Lavacolla, where pilgrims traditionally washed in the river before reaching Santiago de Compostela. As you continue, tall eucalyptus trees line your path, guiding you to Monte del Gozo, or the "Mount of Joy," so named for the jubilant moment when pilgrims first glimpse the Cathedral of Santiago. Descend into the historic city and finish your pilgrimage at the magnificent Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, where you can marvel at its stunning architecture and reflect on your incredible achievement. Do not forget to go to the Pilgrim’s Office with your Pilgrim Passport if you want to get your “Compostela” (Pilgrim Certificate).

Walking distance 19km// walking time approximately 4-5.5 hours

Day 8
Your unforgettable Camino de Santiago holiday has come to an end.
